The Waxahachie Jazz Studies program has several ensembles which are open to all students by audition, including the Jazz Orchestra and several jazz combos.
The Jazz Orchestra is the premiere big band in Waxahachie. The accomplishments of this organization have brought international attention to the school and the city of Waxahachie while providing truly extraordinary educational opportunities and cultural experiences for its musicians.
The WHSJO has performed invitational concerts at the Montreux International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, WinterPark Ski Music Festival in Winterpark, Colorado, University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Festival, and the Texas Christian University Jazz Festival.
Many of the band's graduates have excelled to professional ranks by joining such noted organizations as The Glenn Miller Orchestra, the One O'Clock Lab band at North Texas, and The Dallas Jazz Orchestra. In addition, the band members have gained invaluable experience and inspiration by working with such guest artists as Steve Weist, Stockton Helbing, Tim Ishii, Dan Cavanaugh, Ken Edwards, Larry Spencer, Mike Vax, James Davis, Keith Davis, Rick Stitzell, and Bill Centera.
